The Accolent ERP warehouse management software (“WMS”) system allows the use of mobile wireless devices to maximize the efficiency of warehouse operations. Using a combination of either a wireless tablet and a bluetooth-enabled scanner or an all-in-one handheld device, the WMS system automates standard warehouse operations such as picking, packing, shipping and PO receiving. The WMS system can be run from any device that can run a standard web browser (e.g., Chrome – recommended).

Using the WMS System

  • There are two basic models that can be used for WMS devices.
  • The first option involves the use of a tablet (e.g., Windows Surface, iPad) in conjunction with a bar code scanner sled attachment or, more commonly, a Bluetooth-enabled hand-held scanner:
    • The tablet/scanner gun option uses off-the-shelf consumer devices and therefore, offers many more device choices and will likely be significantly cheaper,
    • Many hardware vendors offer tablets that can be installed in ruggedized mounts that can be attached to the forklift or picking cart, and
    • There are a huge number of available scanner guns that either can connect through a USB port or wirelessly that can be used in combination with the tablet.
  • The second option involves the use of an-all-in-one hand-held unit that is essentially a mobile computing device incorporating a scanner gun and a built-in screen:
    • The second option utilizes proprietary hand-held devices that are offered by manufacturers such as Motorola, Honeywell or Intermec,
    • These are portable and aren’t usually mounted to a vehicle.
    • This approach has advantages and disadvantages,
    • The proprietary hand-held devices are often much more expensive and the user typically has a small 3.5” screen rather than a full size or even a mini tablet screen size to work with.
  • Whichever model you select, the device has to: (1) be capable of running a standard web browser (ideally Google Chrome), (2) communicate over WiFi and (3) have a 1D or 2D scanner capability.
  • Many proprietary hand-held devices run on the Microsoft CE or WEH operating systems, and these can only run stripped-down versions of Mirosoft web browsers — these devices will not work with the Accolent WMS system.
  • Since Google doesn’t offer a stripped-down version of Chrome, if a device can run Google Chrome it is probably able to run a standard web browser.
  • Proprietary hand-held devices that run the Android O/S will typically be able to run a full (standard) web browser.
